What's actually happening
Pluto takes approximately 248 years to complete one orbit of the Sun. Each year it retrogrades for roughly five to six months, covering only a fraction of a degree of the zodiac. The extreme slowness means that Pluto's presence on a given degree can span years; the retrograde is a second, interior pass over the same territory. The station itself — the moment of exact apparent reversal — tends to mark a period of concentrated Plutonian emphasis.
What the tradition makes of it
Pluto is the principle of depth, transformation, and the surfacing of what has been concealed. It rules what is most fundamental and most resistant to easy inspection — the structures of power, the reality of mortality, the material that the psyche has placed below the level of conscious access because it is too much for ordinary awareness.
Pluto retrograde turns this principle inward. The outward manifestations of transformation — the endings, the power shifts, the structural collapses — pause or slow. The inner work intensifies. What is in the process of being transformed within the psyche, within the soul, becomes more available for direct encounter.
The tradition does not read Pluto retrograde as a period of relief from Pluto's demands. The work is simply moved from the outer arena to the interior one. In some ways this is the more difficult version: the transformative pressure that, when external, can be blamed on circumstances is now clearly internal in origin.
The shadow is descent without return — the tendency to go into the Plutonian interior without maintaining the connection to the surface that makes the return possible.
How to actually use it
This is the season for the most honest interior work — examining what has been placed below conscious awareness and what the placement has been costing. The encounters that surface during Pluto retrograde tend to be old; they have been waiting for the conditions under which they could be faced.
The work is not dramatic transformation but the preparation for it: the examination, the naming, the willingness to look at what has been seen only peripherally.
